An-Najah National University organized a field scientific visit to the Palestinian Meteorological Department, attended by a group of undergraduate students under the supervision of Dr. Safaa Hamadeh, Coordinator of the Geography and Geomatics Program, and Dr. Louay Abureideh, Coordinator of the Sustainable Development Office.
The visit aimed to introduce students to the practical operations of meteorology and provide a direct opportunity to learn about weather monitoring mechanisms and the systems used in climate forecasting, highlighting the sector’s significant role in supporting geographical planning and mitigating environmental risks.
The department welcomed the university delegation and provided students with a detailed explanation of how weather elements are measured using specialized instruments. Students also learned about the mechanisms for collecting and analyzing climate data through numerical models and scientific software that support forecasting operations. The students showed great interest in the applications of meteorology, particularly in early warning systems, disaster management, and spatial planning.
This visit aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3, which focuses on good health and well-being by reducing the risks of severe weather events; Goal 11, concerning sustainable cities, which relies on climate knowledge in urban planning; and Goal 13, related to climate action, which requires a precise understanding of climate changes and the capacity to adapt.
Dr. Safaa Hamadeh expressed her appreciation for the scientific benefit gained by the students, emphasizing that such visits are an essential part of preparing Geography and Geomatics students for fieldwork. They allow students to see practical applications of their academic subjects and enhance their research and professional skills.
During the meeting, Dr. Louay Abureideh highlighted the importance of strengthening the university’s cooperation with the Meteorological Department, explaining that students’ direct engagement in a professional environment contributes to skill development and supports the university’s approach to integrating sustainability concepts into education. He also noted that having a national institution like the Meteorological Department serves as a key partner in any project related to climate or risk assessment.
