The Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences at An-Najah National University, represented by the Head of the Department of English, Dr. Mohammed Hamdan, announces the successful completion of its two-year research project entitled “Countermapping Urban Palestine.” This interdisciplinary project sought to rethink the cartography and historiography of Palestine through the use of literary narratives, oral testimonies, and visual forms of documentation.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Lancaster University in the UK and The University of Jordan in Amman, resulting in a range of academic and cultural outputs, including the publication of scholarly articles, the production of cultural memory maps, and the compilation of a specialized bibliography of recordings related to Palestinian urban memory. One of its key achievements was the development of a pilot map of the city of Nablus that integrates memory, literature, and heritage using the Memory Mapper platform.

The project also organized and participated in several academic events, including the workshop “Countermapping Urban Palestine: Mapping Workshop and Research Papers” held at Lancaster University in May 2024, and the event “Self, Society, and the Built Environment: Memory/Mind Mapping” at the University of Jordan in April 2025. In addition, a panel was held as part of the BRISMES Annual Conference at Newcastle University in July 2025, where Lindsey Moore, Mohammed Hamdan, Bayan AlAmmouri, and Samah Naseem presented their research papers. The session was chaired by Madonna Kalousian.

This project reflects the importance of international academic collaboration and the adoption of innovative research approaches in advancing studies on Palestinian cities and their cultural memory.
